BOAT TOUR DETAILS: This year our field trip will be a guided tour of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve which is part of our national park system. This 46,000-acre Preserve is operated under a partnership agreement by the Florida State Park System, the City of Jacksonville, the National Park Service and more than 300 private and corporate landowners. It was created as a National park unit in 1988 and is named for the Timucua, the native people who lived along the waterways in northeast Florida. Much of the Preserve is undeveloped salt marsh accessible only by boat, but there are several sites in the Preserve open to visitors wishing to learn more about this area’s natural and cultural history. The ecosystems within the Timucuan Preserve are among the most productive in the world and provide a glimpse of what “Old Florida” was like.

The tour will start at the Kingsley Plantation which was established in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by Zephaniah Kingsley who made his fortunes by obtaining land and establishing plantations. This is an active archeological site and new discovery is being made often at the park. After our visit of the plantation, we will get on a Pontoon Boat to visit the various ecological systems that existing within the preserve, and we will close our tour with a lunch at one of the oldest restaurant overlooking the preserve.
